There’s usually just one name on everyone’s lips when it comes to quick and tasty South East Asian food in Neukölln, but it’s time to break that mould. If you’re after cheap and authentic Thai food, Mae Charoen, the tiny Thai Imbiss, is well worth a trip down the famous Sonnenallee – but be warned, you’ll have to be lucky to find a seat inside the two-table joint at dinner time.
The dishes may appear to arrive at suspiciously speedy intervals, but rest assured they are freshly cooked in the little kitchen. The wide variety of sauces come with an equally wide selection of ‘substance’ additions, including, tofu, shrimp, beef and chicken. Sensitive souls beware – if the menu declares a dish to be ‘very spicy’ take heed – this is real, flavoursome Thai spice, not a muted European equivalent!
€5 food: the chicken, pork and tofu curries are all bang on the €5 mark
€5 fullness: the main dishes are generous and come with a side stack of rice
€5 change: not enough for a side of spring rolls, but they are a worthwhile and cheap addition anyway!
